Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience Advisor - temporary position (vikariat)
Background
Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) is at the core of what the Red Cross Red Crescent movement does. The International Department of the Swedish Red Cross (SRC) supports national societies within the Movement preparing before, during and after a crisis occurs. SRC has a strong focus on addressing the humanitarian consequences of climate change and is championing the inclusion of environment and climate considerations in humanitarian response.
Our present DRR Advisor is currently on an international mission, and we are therefore looking for a temporary replacement to our headquarters in Sweden.
Your role in the organization
As a DRR and Resilience Advisor you are the policy- and thematic expert and responsible for leading the work on Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience programming, and to ensure quality within. You are part of the Program and Capacity department and report to the Head of Climate and Health Unit.
Job duties and responsibilities
The primary task of the DRR and Resilience Advisor is to support our the programmatic activities of the SRC in and our countries of operation. You will be working with promoting evidence based methodological development and guidelines within the area of Disaster Risk Reduction and Anticipatory Action. Furthermore, you are expected to follow developments within your area of expertise, to contribute to knowledge development and to function as a reference within the organization, as well as acting as the spokesperson for Swedish Red Cross regarding DRR and Anticipatory Action. Networking and maintaining a dialogue with strategic actors both within and outside the Red Cross/Red Crescent (RC/RC) Movement is also an important part of your role. The position implies international travel to complex areas of disaster and/or conflict with high security requirements.
Your profile
You are an experienced and highly self-motivated thematic advisor who understands that to be successful you must be able to work independently while also being a constructive team player with the ability to coordinate with peers with different levels of experience and knowledge in your area of subject matter expertise and related areas. You are both determined and reliable and can create and promote a stable and trusting working atmosphere.
You have strong analytical abilities and exercise sound judgment. You have the ability to take initiative and assume responsibility, and a willingness to question traditional methodologies and promote innovative approaches. You have excellent communication skills.
Requirements for the role
- An academic degree, preferably in disaster risk reduction, disaster management, early action (AA), climate change adaptation or another relevant field.
- At least 5 years’ relevant professional experience in disaster risk management and integrated programme planning within an international humanitarian context.
- Documented experience and application of climate adaptation methods, e.g. Early Action Protocols, integration of climate adaptation into contingency planning and forecasting.
- Documented experience and application of methods to strengthen resilience and activities for locally led responses and community-driven processes.
- Excellent command of Swedish and English as working languages
- A driving license for manual transmission and experience of driving cars with manual transmission.
Desirable qualifications and experience
- Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) or equivalent.
- Experience of working in other parts of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement
- A self-built network and experience of collaborating with other organisations and actors within international humanitarian work.
- Experience of media relations and/or representing the organisation at seminars, panel discussions, etc.
- Experience of supporting national societies in disaster prevention and disaster management.
- Experience of working with research-based methods.
- Languages (e.g. French, Arabic, Spanish or others)
Other information
The position is a temporary position (vikariat) located in any of our four offices in Sweden, with the possibility to work from home up to two days a week. The start date is 1 September. The temporary position runs until the end of January 2027. Please note that this is a local contract and therefore you must be based in Sweden and have the legal right to work in Sweden.
