Beskrivning
In 2025, the world faces the highest number of ongoing armed conflicts since World War II. Several European countries have announced that they intend to withdraw from the Anti-personnel Mine Ban Convention. At the same time, humanitarian needs are larger than ever and constantly growing. Health and humanitarian aid workers are being killed in growing numbers. From 280 in 2023 to 382 in 2024 – more than ever. This year is looking even worse.
The Swedish Red Cross invites you to an evening exploring one of the most pressing humanitarian challenges of our time: safeguarding the rule-based world order amid rising global tensions and uncertainty.
As the world faces growing instability, the foundations of the rule-based international order are being put to the test. But even in times of crisis, or perhaps especially then, states, institutions, and individuals must uphold the legal norms that safeguard humanity and global security. Even wars have limits: international humanitarian law seeks to limit the effects of armed conflict and protect those who are not participating in hostilities.
Through a range of perspectives, we will discuss how international humanitarian law is being challenged today in battlefields and political arenas, why adherence to international law remains a cornerstone of peace and accountability, and what tools, strategies, and responsibilities the international community has to its disposal to respond to violations and protect people and communities.
